DAP's motion on Chief Justice shot down in Parliament by Speaker - malaysiakini

Malaysian Insider reports:

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 — The DAP failed in its attempt to table an emergency motion in Parliament to open investigations into Chief JusticeTan Sri Zaki Azmi’s expose last week of judicial corruption.

However, DAP national chairman Karpal Singh said the party was committed to pursue the matter right to the end.

"We cannot have a Chief Justice who is involved in corruption. We are taking this to the end," he told reporters in Parliament this morning.

Karpal, who is also the MP for Bukit Gelugor, said he was "surprised" that Zaki had publicly acknowledged the corrupt practices of the two retired judges at a forum on "Integrity, the Catalyst for Sustainable Development" at the National Integrity Convention in Kuching last Friday.

Karpal criticised the top judge for keeping silent over the issue for so long.

Karpal said he had refiled the same motion with the Speaker's office and hoped the Speaker would allow the emergency motion to be tabled tomorrow.

Speaking on a separate matter, he urged the federal government to make clear its stand on whether the six judges who were awarded ex-gratia payments earlier this year were sacked from their positions or forced to resign in 1988.

The recent disclosure by de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz of the ex-gratia payments totalling RM10.5 million has caused a nationwide uproar. His predecessor Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, who resigned from his Cabinet position two months ago to protest the abuse of the Internal Security Act, had promised the judges concerned not to disclose the amount.
