I wrote something (Najib + Mahathir - Be afraid. Be very afraid) a few weeks ago:
Our Deputy PM Najib Tun Razak is tipped to be the PM by March next year. He is tipped to be the head of the executive branch of the government by March next year. He is going to be a very powerful man next year.
"Mr Najib is a carbon copy of Dr Mahathir and we fear in his rise to power a possible return of iron-fisted rule and intolerance for dissent and curbs on he political opposition," said a diplomat with a European mission, on condition of anonymity..."I welcome the departure of Abdullah and am ready to give advice to the new overnment," Mahathir told local reporters after confirming that Abdullah as leaving. - malaysiakini.com
Ex PM Mahathir is also going to be a very powerful man by March next year (Full Malaysiakini's report here). He is going to return to power through Najib. He is going to be like Putin.
Now read this Malaysian Insider report:
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — In what will be seen as an endorsement of Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir’s candidacy by Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Pekan Umno Youth today nominated the son of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to contest the party wing’s number one post.
The Pekan nomination will make Khairy Jamaluddin’s uphill battle even more difficult, especially if party members interpret it as Najib’s tacit endorsement of Mukhriz.
The division also nominated Johor Umno Youth chief, Razali Ibrahim for the Umno Youth deputy chief’s post.
Even though Najib has denied endorsing anyone, and will most certainly deny any favouritism, the Pekan nomination may well have put him in an unassailable position barring any unforeseen developments.
In an immediate reaction, Mukhriz said he is grateful with the decision by the Pekan Youth delegates to nominate him.
When asked whether the nomination suggests an endorsement by Najib, Mukhriz said, “I cannot say for sure, but I understand it was a choice made from the floor.”
“It was a glimpse of the grass roots sentiment, I don’t think there was a directive from the top, as this is not Datuk Seri Najib's style,” he told The Malaysian Insider.
On the three cornered fight for the Umno Youth chief post, Mukhriz said this is a normal process in a democracy.
“It gives our delegates a chance to chose, I am quite sure they are mature enough to know who they want,” he added.
The last time the Umno Youth chief post was contested was in 1996 when Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi defeated the incumbent Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik.
Mukhriz now has 66 nominations, followed by Khairy with 46 and former Selangor MB Datuk Seri Khir Toyo, 41.
For the Umno Youth deputy chief post, Razali is leading with 75 nominations, followed by Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican with 57.
Earlier today, Khir obtained the minimal nominations, 39, when the Balik Pulau division in Penang nominated him.
Khairy, who was seen as the favourite to take over the movement’s leadership until the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, his father-in-law, announced that he was not defending the presidency, received his 39th nomination yesterday from the Tangga Batu division, in Malacca.
Mukhriz, the earliest to announce his intention to contest the Youth chief post qualified on Oct 12, three days after the start of Umno divisional meetings.
The Mukhriz-Khairy contest has taken on added significance as it is seen as a proxy battle between Mahathir and Abdullah.
