Bomb squad working on package outside UMNO Supreme Council meeting (malaysiakini)

As the 37 Umno supreme council members huddled in a room to discuss explosive party affairs and scores of journalists waited outside for the possibility of any detonation, an unexpected guest appeared at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

Accompanied by a number of policemen, it is believed that the mechanical guest had been summoned to the location to inspect a suspicious looking package found in the car park outside the building.

The guest was a robot from the bomb disposal unit and until 5.15pm was still in the vicinity checking the ‘package’ while some 10 policemen kept watch.

The area was cordoned off and journalists were barred from approaching the scene.

However, it is unclear who had called the police but those in the building were not asked to evacuate.

No further details on the matter were available.

"There is no sense of alarm or anything of that sort. The police are just doing their job and there were no orders to evacuate the building," said a journalist who was at the scene.

The Umno supreme council meeting, which started at about 3pm continued uninterrupted on the 38th floor of the building which is also the party headquarters - malaysiakini.com
